Yiu On Halfway House is a halfway house for ex-mentally ill rehabilitants and was founded in 1988. It is one of the rehabilitation services of Stewards. Yiu On House provides accommodation, counseling and life skill training so as to develop thepotentials and living capabilities of ex-mentally ill persons while they integrate into the community and live independently.

Features of the Service

Yiu On Halfway House has a professional team to provide 24 hours service. We are not only to meet the food and accommodation and social needs of the residents, but also to concerned about their psychological, mental and spiritual health. We are devoted to promoting community reintegration and family reunion.

Service Users

  • Aged 15 or above, Male, ex-mentally ill persons
  • Stable mental status
  • Capable of self-care and demonstrate to work in sheltered workshop and motivation for open employment
  • Applicants will go through selection process
  • Eligible person is required to take a residential adjustment period for one month. Successful application is subject to the passing of residential adjustment period.


Referrals can be made by social workers, psychiatrists or other appropriate services to the Central Referral System for Rehabilitation Services of the Social Welfare Department.

Visiting Medical Practitioner (VMP) Scheme

According to Chief Executive’s Policy Address 2005-06, the Government would launch a Visiting Medical Practitioner Scheme (the Scheme) in residential care homes for the disabled (RCHDs) to provide primary medical care and support to the residents of these homes.  Yiu On House participated the Scheme since April 2007, to provide basic medical care and support to 42 residents.

Service Objectives

The service operators of the RCHDs will be able to establish a service network with the private general medical practitioners with a view to providing continuing medical care and support to the residents in these homes for the improvement of their general health and preventive care.


Features of the Service

Under the Scheme, the private general medical practitioner should provide medical consultation, health promotion and preventive care to staff, residents and their families. In addition to VMP service, Yiu On halfway House collaborates with Peace Medical Centre to deliver oral care talk and oral check services to our service users.

Scope of service:

The range of services to be provided by the visiting medical practitioners (VMP) engaged in the Scheme includes:

  • Staff training on health care / infection control
  • Health care talks to residents and their families.
  • Hygiene audit
  • Oral care talks to residents and their families.
  • Oral check to residents and their families.

Admission and Discharge procedure

Service users, their families and staff of Yiu On halfway House are included into the Scheme. The programs are based on first-come first-serve. Withdrawal application should be submitted to the Officer-in-charge.
